Set in the hills above Essaouira, Jardin des Douars draws influence from Moroccan tradition. Designed and built with local materials, the curving buildings, terracotta domes, and lush gardens of Jardin des Douars emphasize the natural beauty of Morocco’s culture and environment.

Built in traditional Moroccan style, the hotel uses local materials—tadelakt, zellige, and carved wood—to create a space that feels handcrafted and timeless. There are 32 rooms and suites, plus six private villas with their own pools. With arched windows, soft lighting, and simple comforts, interiors are colorful and warm without being busy. Some rooms have fireplaces or terraces with valley views.

The layout of the hotel allows for privacy. Adults can unwind by the quiet pool, while families gravitate toward the separate heated pool and larger garden areas. The grounds are expansive and calm, ideal for slow walks or a quiet read in the shade. Birds flit between palms and bougainvillea, and the sounds of the city are miles away.

Meals are served in the hotel’s central dining room or on outdoor terraces overlooking the gardens. The kitchen blends Moroccan and Mediterranean flavors, with ingredients sourced from the hotel’s garden or local markets. Breakfast is generous and relaxed. Dinner is a sit-down affair with dishes like tagine, grilled fish, and seasonal vegetables. The bar is open all day for drinks and snacks.

The small spa includes a hammam and treatment rooms. Massages and facials use local oils and techniques, with an emphasis on relaxation rather than ceremony. Yoga can be arranged on request, and hammam rituals are offered daily.

Essaouira’s medina and beach are a short drive away, and the hotel can arrange taxis or day trips. Guests often choose to explore the souks, take a surf lesson, or visit local argan oil cooperatives. Back at the hotel, there’s space to simply do nothing

Families are welcome, but the vibe remains peaceful thanks to the hotel’s thoughtful layout and service. Staff are friendly, discreet, and helpful without being formal.

Jardin des Douars is slow, generous, and surrounded by beauty. It’s a place to rest, eat well, and enjoy the Moroccan countryside in style.

THE SURF

Essaouira, known for its wind in the summer months, presents ideal conditions for wind and kitesurfing from March to September. In the remaining months of the year, October to March, when the winds die down, Essaouira displays optimal conditions for board surfers. The main beach in town is great for beginners and kite surfers. Sidi Kaouki, 25 minutes south, offers long beach breaks for all levels and is rarely crowded. For more serious surfers, Moulay Bouzerktoun, 30 minutes north, delivers powerful reef waves and strong winds, best for advanced riders. Morning sessions often offer the cleanest conditions before the wind picks up.

THE FOOD

The restaurant serves fresh Moroccan and Mediterranean dishes with a local focus. Guests can dine indoors or out, with views over the gardens. Breakfast is included, and lunch is a relaxed affair.. Dinner is more refined but still low-key. Local wines are available, and the bar stays open late for a quiet nightcap. Essaouira’s medina, 15 minutes away, offers casual cafés and seafood grills.

THE DESTINATION

With 320 days of sun every year, Essaouira experiences a warm climate, with sunny days and chilly nights. Pack sweaters with your swimsuits. Jardin des Douars is a 15-minute drive from Essaouira and 20 minutes from Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU). Marrakech Menara Airport is 2.5 hours by car.
