Hotel Terrestre is a solar-powered escape near Puerto Escondido. With 14 sculptural villas, thoughtful architecture, private plunge pools, and ocean views, it’s a quiet hideaway for those wanting to disconnect.

Designed by architect Alberto Kalach, it’s built for guests looking to unplug. The hotel runs entirely off solar energy, uses no air conditioning, and encourages a digital detox with limited WiFi.
Each villa spans two levels. On the ground floor, you’ll find an open-air living area, private garden, and plunge pool. Upstairs, bedrooms open onto rooftop terraces with ocean or mountain views. Interiors are simple: terracotta floors, handwoven textiles, clay walls, and plenty of natural light. The design is meant to blend in with the landscape rather than stand out. Cooling comes from cross-ventilation and ceiling fans, not machines.
The property’s layout is calm and intentional. A central pool, long and linear, sits in the middle of the hotel, shaded by palms. The restaurant, also open-air, offers a rotating menu based on seasonal ingredients. There’s no set dining schedule; guests eat when they like. Service is relaxed and friendly.
A spa and temazcal (traditional Mexican steam bath) provide space for deeper rest. Paths through the gardens lead to reading nooks, daybeds, and shaded lounges. No music plays over speakers, no TVs hum in the background. Nature sets the rhythm here.
Terrestre isn’t for everyone. There’s no room service or minibar. The terrain is sandy, and you’ll likely get dust on your feet. But that’s the point. The hotel is designed to remove distractions and invite stillness. It appeals to travelers who are drawn to architecture, interested in sustainability, and looking to reset.
The beach is a short walk away, though it’s not ideal for swimming due to strong currents. More swimmable beaches, like Carrizalillo or Playa Bacocho, are within a 30-minute drive. The hotel can also help organize outings—surf lessons, dolphin-watching, and boat rides to nearby lagoons.

Puerto Escondido is one of Mexico’s premier surf zones. Zicatela Beach, just 20 minutes from Terrestre, is known for its heavy beach break and consistent barrels—best suited for advanced surfers. For something gentler, La Punta offers a peeling left-hand point break ideal for intermediates. Beginners can head to Carrizalillo, a protected bay with softer waves and board rentals on-site. Mornings are usually glassy before afternoon winds pick up. Best surf season is April to October, though waves roll in year-round.
Terrestre’s open-air restaurant focuses on seasonal, local ingredients. Guests can expect fresh Oaxacan flavors: grilled fish, tamales, house-made tortillas, and mezcal-based cocktails. The aesthetic is simple and warm—wooden furniture, woven lamps, and views of the sea. Breakfast is included, lunch and dinner are à la carte. The team offers relaxed but attentive service. Nearby in Puerto Escondido, guests can explore local taquerías, seafood spots, and beach cafés. Kakurega Omakase (25 minutes by car) offers a notable sushi tasting menu in a garden setting.
Fly into Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), a 30-minute drive from Terrestre. The hotel can arrange transfers. The dry season (Nov–May) brings sun and breeze. Summers are hot with afternoon rains. Puerto Escondido, a city rooted in legend and myth, has a unique historical background that guests can explore. Previously a coffee port in the 1920s, Puerto Escondido became a surfing hub in the 1960s. Now with its rich history and popularity for surfing, Puerto Escondido is a popular place for surfers and travelers to visit. Nearby, guests can explore Mazunte’s beaches, visit the bioluminescent lagoon in Manialtepec, or take a sunrise boat tour to spot dolphins and turtles. Yoga classes, surf lessons, and coastal hikes are also close by.
