The Malibu Shores Motel, an iconic motel frequented by Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young, witnessed historic cultural change during the 60s and 70s. A centerpiece of the Malibu lifestyle, The Surfrider Malibu gives a modern take on the motel's historic past, offering 20 thoughtfully designed rooms for guests to relax and enjoy the California surf culture.

Each room is compact but thoughtfully laid out, offering private balconies, handmade teak furniture, and curated design details. Walls are whitewashed, linens are crisp, and the Pacific is never out of view. Whether you’re waking up to glassy waves or watching the sun dip behind the pier, the rooms feel personal and well-placed.

A key part of the experience is the rooftop. Open only to hotel guests, it’s home to a relaxed restaurant and bar where the kitchen serves local, organic dishes alongside small-batch wines and coastal-inspired cocktails. The space is unpretentious, sunny, and often the spot where plans are made for the day—or where they’re forgotten entirely.

The team behind The Surfrider are locals who surf, care about design, and live the lifestyle they’re promoting. Services are intuitive and relaxed. Guests have access to surfboards, paddleboards, and beach gear, with everything easily arranged through the in-room iPad concierge. There’s a Jeep in the driveway that guests can borrow for day trips up the coast or quick runs into town.

The hotel aims to blend ease with access. From its location on Pacific Coast Highway, guests are minutes from some of Malibu’s best surf, hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, and a growing number of standout food spots. Nobu and Malibu Farm are within walking distance. So are quieter beaches and secret lookouts, if you know where to go.

Everything at The Surfrider is designed to support the pace of the coast—unhurried, outdoorsy, and design-conscious. It’s about waking up with the waves, exploring the shoreline, and ending the day on the roof with a drink and the ocean in view. The Surfrider offers a stay that’s simple, thoughtful, and distinctly Malibu. I

THE SURF

Malibu is a top-tier surf destination with consistent waves, especially in summer. Directly across from the hotel is Surfrider Beach, known for its long right-hand point break and mellow vibe—great for all levels. A 10-minute drive west leads to Zuma Beach, offering beach breaks and more space to spread out. First Point at Surfrider is famous for longboard-friendly peelers, while Third Point can deliver faster, punchier rights for more advanced surfers. Crowds are common, but so is the quality.

THE FOOD

The Surfrider’s rooftop restaurant is open only to guests. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients—grilled fish, grain bowls, flatbreads, and natural wines. The vibe is relaxed and coastal. Downstairs, guests can enjoy in-room dining. Nearby, Malibu Farm and Nobu Malibu are both within walking distance for waterfront dining.

THE DESTINATION

The Surfrider Malibu is located on Pacific Coast Highway, about a 45-minute drive from LAX. The area is sunny year-round with mild, breezy weather. Malibu was traditionally home to the Native American Chumash tribe, who named it Humaliwo, meaning "where the surf sounds loudly." Over time, Malibu started to grow as a home for the famous and wealthy. However, by the 1950s, as California surf culture was growing, Malibu became a desired destination because of its reliable waves and weather. Malibu still carries this tradition, as every year, surfers find their way to Malibu's beaches where they enjoy surf and sun.

While in Malibu, guests can enjoy this laid-back lifestyle, by exploring hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, shopping at Malibu Country Mart, or visiting local wineries, cafes, and restaurants.
