A vision of João Reis, Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort is where surf meets sustainability. The resort was built with respect for the surrounding nature, making it a place where nature and comfort intertwine, as the hotel's design provides barefoot luxury on São Miguel’s north coast.

The resort includes 30 accommodations split between studios, one-bedroom villas, and larger retreat villas. All units feature clean-lined interiors with polished concrete floors, timber accents, and basalt stone touches. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood in and frame views of the ocean, forest, or mountains. Private terraces and kitchenettes come standard, while some villas include hot tubs or outdoor showers.

The property has a central pool and lounge area, bordered by gardens that grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers used in the kitchen and spa. The onsite restaurant, Areais, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. The menu leans local—fresh-caught fish, São Jorge cheese, Azorean beef—and the space is relaxed and open-air, with long tables and sea views.

The resort also includes a wellness program with yoga, massages, and holistic treatments available on request. The beach is just a few steps away, and Santa Bárbara runs its own surf school with certified instructors and rental gear for all levels. Whether you’re looking to ride waves or simply watch them, the setting offers space to slow down.

The buildings are energy efficient, water is filtered onsite, and toiletries are biodegradable. Even the landscaping is designed to require minimal irrigation, using native plant species to support local biodiversity. The resort is currently developing a farm-to-table program, intending to bring organic food to the hotel's restaurant.

Beyond the resort, guests can explore São Miguel’s volcanic interior, crater lakes, and thermal springs. Caldeira Velha and Lagoa do Fogo are both within a 20-minute drive, while the capital, Ponta Delgada, is just 30 minutes away for shops, dining, and cultural sites.

Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort is for travelers who want the comfort of a design hotel with the natural feel of the Azores. It’s a space that offers peace, privacy, and access to one of Portugal’s most striking island landscapes.

THE SURF

Santa Bárbara Beach is one of the best surf spots in the Azores, known for its consistent year-round swell and long black-sand stretch. It’s an exposed beach break with mostly lefts and rights, ideal for all levels, though conditions get heavier in winter. The best surf season is from September to April, with offshore winds in the morning. Nearby, Monte Verde (5 minutes east) offers mellow waves for beginners, while Ribeira Grande (just south) can be faster and hollower on the right swell. Lineups tend to be quiet, with friendly local surfers.

THE FOOD

The hotel’s Areais restaurant offers modern Azorean cuisine made with fresh, organic ingredients from the island and the resort’s gardens. Expect fish caught that morning, grass-fed meats, and plant-forward options. The restaurant’s design is clean and open, with wood finishes and ocean views. There’s also a beachfront bar for cocktails and snacks. For local dining, Ribeira Grande is a 10-minute drive with options like Cantinho do Cais for seafood and Alabote for classic Portuguese fare.

THE DESTINATION

Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort is a 20-minute drive from Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL), the main gateway to São Miguel. The resort sits on the island’s north shore in Ribeira Grande. The weather is mild year-round with occasional Atlantic winds. Sought after for its rich land and easy access to water, Ribeira Grande has historically been a city of trade and agriculture. The people are Catholic with a quiet, outdoors-focused culture. Things to do nearby include hot springs at Caldeira Velha (15 minutes), hikes through the Sete Cidades caldera, whale watching from Ponta Delgada, or simply exploring the coastline.
