Sublime Comporta is hidden in a peaceful pine forest on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. The hotel blends contemporary design with natural materials, offering a laid-back escape focused on sustainability. You will find well-designed rooms, suites and private villas, along with a spa and a farm-to-table restaurant, all just a few minutes from the beach.

Sublime Comporta is a design retreat tucked into a pine forest just outside the village of Comporta. Spread across 17 hectares, the property feels more like a landscape than a hotel. Rather than a central building, there’s a scattering of rooms, suites, and freestanding villas, each with its own rhythm and level of privacy.
Comporta has long been considered a hidden escape for those living in Lisbon, but has recently become a low-key destination for creative travellers from further afield. It’s still small and largely undeveloped, with dirt roads, quiet beaches and a steady, unpolished charm.
The design leans quiet: raw timber, poured concrete, floor-to-ceiling windows, light textiles. Interiors are minimal but warm, built around natural textures and long views. The resort has 23 rooms and suites and 22 two to five bedroom villas, some with fireplaces or private pools, others with wide decks that open to the forest. The Bio-Pool Suites are set on stilts above a natural swimming pool, filtered by aquatic plants. You step from the deck straight into the water. These rooms are particularly still in the early hours, when the light comes low through the trees.
There are several shared spaces dotted across the grounds: an indoor pool, a simple spa, shaded lounges and a yoga pavilion. The main restaurant, Sem Porta, opens out toward the trees. In the garden nearby, you’ll find Food Circle, a small open kitchen surrounded by beds of herbs and vegetables. Guests sit around the fire as each course is cooked in front of them.
Sublime also operates its own beach club on nearby Carvalhal Beach. It’s about a 10-minute drive from the hotel, and guests can take a shuttle or bike there. The setting is relaxed and low-impact, with timber structures tucked into the dunes and a short menu built around fresh seafood and local produce. There are loungers, cocktails, and just enough service.
Sustainability is part of the infrastructure, not a separate feature. Solar panels support the energy needs of the property. Water from sinks and showers is treated and reused for irrigation. Single-use plastics are avoided entirely. Much of the produce comes from the hotel’s own organic garden, which also supplies herbs and ingredients for the spa. These systems are in place not to impress, but because they make sense. They reflect the same quiet attention that runs through the rest of the hotel.

The Comporta region offers mellow beach breaks ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. The most consistent waves appear from late autumn to early spring. Praia do Carvalhal and Praia do Pego—both around a 15-minute drive—are the main surf spots, with soft, peeling waves and low crowds. The summer sees smaller swells, ideal for longboarding and surf lessons. Winds tend to stay calm in the morning, picking up slightly by afternoon. This stretch of coast is relaxed, with uncrowded conditions and long, sandy beaches.
Food is a key part of the experience here. Sem Porta, the hotel’s main restaurant, offers a modern take on traditional Alentejo cuisine, shaped by the seasons and ingredients grown onsite or nearby. The garden is central to the hotel’s ethos — with over 300 varieties of herbs, vegetables and edible flowers. It’s also where you’ll find Food Circle, an intimate chef’s table set around an open fire. Meals here are built slowly, cooked in front of guests using wood, charcoal and age-old techniques. The experience is personal, quiet and deeply rooted in place.
Comporta is a quiet stretch of Portugal’s Alentejo coast, about 90 minutes south of Lisbon. Once a fishing and farming area, it’s become a favourite escape for Lisbon locals and creative travellers drawn to its raw beauty and steady pace. Strict development rules have kept things low-key: pine forests, whitewashed village houses, sandy paths and wide Atlantic beaches. There’s a small mix of boutiques, restaurants and galleries, but most of the charm lies in what hasn’t changed. It’s a place where nature, design and rhythm come together without trying too hard.
