Vilalara Grand Hotel sits quietly on a low cliff overlooking the Atlantic on the Algarve coast of Portugal. Originally designed in the 1970s by landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and architect João António Ribeiro, the resort is a rare example of modernist architecture in southern Portugal.

Brutalist in structure but with gentle curves, soft colors, and open terraces that reflects the organic forms of the surrounding cliffs. Its modernist heritage is visible in soft arches, pale concrete, and long horizontal lines, but the overall effect is calm and natural. The buildings sit low in the landscape, surrounded by gardens and broad lawns, opening gradually toward the sea. Suites are spread across terraced buildings, each with private outdoor space and a sense of privacy. Inside, the rooms are open and understated, with warm neutral tones, textured materials, and generous light.

It’s a proper resort — large, but low-key. The hotel opens directly onto a protected beach cove, reached by a wooden walkway that leads through trees and stone. Up on the main grounds, there are several saltwater pools, shaded paths, and a restaurant terrace with views across the cliffs. The gardens are mature and lush, carefully planted to create pockets of quiet.

Suites are spacious and light-filled, each with its own terrace or balcony. Interiors mix natural stone, earth tones, and soft lighting, keeping things simple and soothing. No aggressive branding or trend-chasing — just quiet, mature design.

Wellness plays a central role in the experience. Guests come here to slow down, restore, and reset. The spa offers a range of treatments and programs, blending bodywork, movement, and nutrition with gentle structure. Whether for a few hours or a full week, the focus is on calm, clarity, and care.

Vilalara is not designed for surfers, but it’s a good base if you’re splitting your trip between wellness and wave-chasing. The western Algarve’s surf beaches are around an hour’s drive away, making day trips possible.

THE SURF

Most of the beaches around Vilalara are calm and sheltered. That said, a few nearby spots catch the right conditions when a west or southwest swell lines up. Praia da Galé is the most reliable of the bunch, with soft beach breaks that work on rising tides. Praia da Falésia also sees occasional shape on wrapped swell, especially in winter. Further east, Forte Novo and Vale do Lobo can break when the swell pushes through, though they’re less consistent. For more serious sessions, head west. The best-known breaks in southern Portugal are just over an hour’s drive from the hotel. Arrifana is a long right-hand point that works well on west swells and mid tides. Amado offers forgiving peaks and mellow longboard conditions. Cordoama and Tonel are more exposed and powerful, delivering rawer waves when the swell hits. Best surf season runs from October to April, when west swells are more frequent and the lineups are quieter.

THE FOOD

There are two restaurants on-site, both focused on seasonal Mediterranean cooking. Much of the produce is locally sourced — vegetables from nearby farms, fish from coastal markets, olive oil pressed just inland. The menus follow a light, clean style: grilled seafood, fresh salads, and simple desserts made with citrus, almonds, or honey. Dishes are unfussy but carefully prepared. There’s always something for guests with dietary needs or a softer appetite, including plant-based options and wellness-focused plates. Meals are served in open-air spaces with sea views and warm air - the sound of water not far off.

THE DESTINATION

Faro is the nearest airport, about 45 minutes east by car. The drive follows the A22 through open countryside and small coastal towns before turning down toward the cliffs near Porches. The surrounding area is known for its pottery workshops, whitewashed villages, and quiet coves tucked beneath ochre cliffs. You can walk the coast in either direction, stopping at beaches like Praia da Marinha or Senhora da Rocha, or visit nearby towns like Lagoa and Carvoeiro for simple seafood restaurants and local markets. A rental car is recommended for exploring.
