With only five standalone eco-lodges and no other development on the island, Pinang offers a true escape for those seeking simplicity and quiet. The experience is designed to be slow, grounded, and deeply disconnected from modern life.

Each lodge is handcrafted from local wood and built for natural airflow, with thatched roofs and open-air elements. Interiors are basic but thoughtfully arranged: a double bed with mosquito netting, simple shelving, solar-powered lighting, and a private bathroom with a cold-water shower and composting toilet. There’s no Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, or screens.

The entire island runs sustainably. Solar panels provide electricity, rainwater is harvested and filtered, and waste is managed in-house. There are no motorized vehicles, and all movement happens on foot. The island’s white-sand beaches are clean and quiet, with clear water for swimming and snorkeling just meters from your room. Guests can also paddleboard, kayak, or walk the island’s perimeter in under an hour. Marine life is abundant, and coral reefs are easily accessible from the shore.

A small team of staff lives on the island and handles meals, maintenance, and guest needs. Meals are prepared daily using fresh local ingredients—mostly fish, rice, vegetables, and tropical fruit. Food is served communally at a shared table in the open-air dining space. Menus lean toward simple, home-style Indonesian cooking, and dietary needs can be accommodated with notice. The island doesn’t serve alcohol, but guests are welcome to bring their own.

Pinang Island is best for travelers who want to unplug, slow down, and reconnect with nature. It’s suited to couples, friends, or solo visitors who are comfortable with rustic amenities and who value quiet over convenience. There’s no schedule and little structure—just good meals, fresh air, and a view that doesn’t change.

If you’re looking for spa treatments, high-speed internet, or room service, this isn’t the place. But if your ideal holiday is barefoot, book in hand, and salt on your skin, Pinang is hard to beat.

THE SURF

The Banyak Islands offer some of Indonesia’s best waves without the usual crowds. Pinang Island sits just minutes from two standout breaks—Bay of Plenty and Treasure Island—both known for long, clean waves and consistent swell. These spots aren’t for beginners, but they’re perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers looking for quality and space. Over 15 waves in the area offer a mix of barrels, walls, and playful sections. A trusted local surf guide checks the conditions daily and takes guests to the best breaks, including a few off-the-map gems only the locals know.

THE FOOD

Meals are cooked fresh daily in a communal open-air kitchen. Expect simple Indonesian home cooking—grilled fish, tempeh, vegetables, rice, and sambal. Meals are shared at long tables. No à la carte menu, but dietary needs can be accommodated. It’s casual, communal, and fresh. No alcohol is served, but guests can bring their own.

THE DESTINATION

Fly or ferry to Karimunjawa from Semarang or Jepara (Central Java), then take a 30-minute boat ride organized by the hotel. The weather is hot and tropical year-round, with the rainy season from November to March. The island is Muslim-majority, so respectful dress in transit is advised. Since the island is remote, nearby activities are limited. The hotel, however, provides guests with activities like surfing, yoga, and wellness retreats.
