Built from wood, natural stone, and Sri Lankan iluk, Tekanda Longe is designed to reflect the natural beauty of Sri Lankan nature and culture. With high ceilings, stone floors, and big windows that pull in the sounds and green of the forest, guests can find a place to breathe deeply and experience the world without distractions.

Each room has a shaded terrace and minimalist style—whitewashed walls, concrete beds, and rattan fans. There’s no air conditioning, but the breeze moves easily through. You’ll wake to birdsong and fall asleep to the sound of distant waves or rainfall. WiFi is available but quietly de-emphasized.

Down the steps from the rooms, the open-air pavilion serves as the lodge’s hub. Breakfast is included. Ayurvedic treatments and yoga sessions are offered on request. The pool is small but well placed, surrounded by greenery with a view through the trees toward the sea.

Tekanda is adults-only, quiet by design, and run with a light touch. The lodge is ideal for people who want to unplug, read, stretch, and eat simply in nature.

Scooters can be arranged for trips down to the beach or surf breaks. Ahangama’s restaurants, shops, and cafés are a short ride away.

Tekanda emphasizes the importance of a respectful relationship with nature and the culture around them. In working with local farmers and artisans and using solar-powered electricity, owers, Charlie and Richard, look to create a sustainable way of life in the Ahangama area.

Tekanda is for travelers looking to connect. The lodge offers cooking lessons with the head chef, easy access to local fishing markets, and opportunities to help with tea weighing on the estate. Through thoughtful design and planning, Tekanda invites guests to be a part of the local culture, helping them immerse themselves fully into their surroundings to best experience their stay.

THE SURF

Ahangama offers warm, consistent surf most of the year, with peak swells from November to April. The area is known for mellow reef and beach breaks—ideal for beginners and intermediates. Kabalana ("The Rock") is a 10-minute ride and offers a reliable A-frame reef. Sticks is another nearby option with long lefts over reef, best for intermediate surfers. More advanced riders can head 20 minutes south to Rams Right in Midigama, a short, punchy right-hand reef that barrels. Early mornings are usually glassy with light offshore wind.

THE FOOD

Tekanda Lodge offers a fresh, simple breakfast with tropical fruit, Sri Lankan hoppers, and tea or coffee. The open-air dining space overlooks the jungle. Other meals aren’t served, but staff can recommend nearby places. Ahangama has a growing food scene, with beach cafés and healthy eateries within a 10-minute scooter ride. Popular spots include The Kip (for brunch) and Ceylon Sliders (further up in Weligama) for dinner and drinks.

THE DESTINATION

Tekanda Lodge is located just inland from Ahangama, on Sri Lanka’s south coast. The area is tropical and humid, with sunny, dry weather from November to April. Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the nearest international hub, around 2.5 hours away by car or 3 hours by train. From the airport, a private transfer or a rideshare is recommended.

Ahangama is a small fishing and surfing town. Known for their friendly and welcoming nature, the people of Ahangama live lives full of connection and tradition. Stilt-fishing, Ahangama's traditional style of fishing, dominates the industry. The town itself offers numerous opportunities to get to know the area better, whether that be tours of historic Buddhist temples, visits to tea estates, or yoga and wellness classes.

Nearby activities include surf lessons, yoga classes, day trips to Galle Fort (40 minutes away), and visits to tea plantations or turtle hatcheries. Scooter rental is available on-site.
